Nick Broomfield Palin film to debut in Toronto
I left Alaska before Nick Broomfield got there last year, but I’ve been in email contact with him and know he’s spoken to many of the friends I made there in 2010.
I also know the high quality of his work.
Thus, I’m delighted to learn that Nick’s Palin documentary will be a highlight of the Toronto Film Festival from September 8-18.
I couldn’t have a better opening act for THE ROGUE, which will be published on September 20.
Let me rephrase that: I don’t consider Nick Broomfield an opening act for anyone. He’s one of the best documentary filmmakers in the world, and I’m proud and happy to share September with him. Let’s hope his “Sarah Palin–You Betcha!” will receive national distribution throughout the U.S.
Regarding THE ROGUE, so much is happening in terms of national media bookings that my return to Alaska may have to be delayed.
Looks like there will be so many Lower Forty-Eight media appearances between mid-September and mid-October that I simply won’t have time to make the long–and longed-for–trek back to Lake Lucille and environs until after the first wave of fun and furor has subsided.
I’ll share details here as soon as I’m permitted to do so.
But for now, like the book itself, details of publicity appearances are embargoed.
Way to go Joe! Tag team the witch. Throw a bucket of water on her to see if she melts. Or hold a mirror up to her like Perseus did to Medusa. The Greeks had it going ya know!
September is shaping up to be a very good month!
I never did get inside the FC Barcelona stadium Joe, but I did see it from the outside. It was hot and the lure of those sangrias was too strong. I did think of you however and raised a few glasses to the success of The Rogue.
Joe – plz say it isn’t so that you won’t be making an appearance in Alaska where it all happened until after touring the “lower 48”?!?!?! I for one, and probably many more of my dear fellow Alaskans, would like to be part of the initial “fun and furor”! Not fair to put us last on the list! P.S. Can’t wait to read your book. 🙂
The Toronto Film festival is a big ,well attended and well respected event. It is a fitting venue, as the rest of the world was asking, why was America allowing Palin to dumb it down and spew such hate,America was better than that. The rest of the world saw her for what she was not, while MSM propped her up.
Red Carpet all the way for “The Rogue”
What great news. I’m looking forward to September 20. Many thanks for your efforts in exposing this vindictive, evil fraud and her henchmen.
Great news!!! The documentary and your book, hopefully, will get the message out on just how dangerous she is to the world.
I think Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was a great choice.
One thought I had was that should Palin have attempted to stop the film from being premiered in the U.S., she’s dead in the water for stopping it from happening in another country adding the fact that it was created by a Brit!!!
So sad! Too bad!!
Cathy–
Not my call, but it’s like electoral votes. The big corporations, like the major political parties, apply money and effort
first where the potential return is greatest. You must know how much I love Alaska and how eager I am to get back.

Joe is right about Nick’s talent. If you get the chance, please see his documentary about Aileen Wournos. It is shocking.
well the guy is fearless that everyone should know.
i just watched a 2 minute trailor on youtube.
what is obvious right away is how really class-less palin is in front of a crowd.
and how the audience is totally white and appears as mindless as she is.
this film will expose palin as the fraud she is but i doubt very many take her serious anymore.
September 21 will be a joyful day for me. Release of Joe’s book and a Ray Lamontagne concert on the same date will make the day very special for me.
Please post your schedule for book signings; I would love to see you in Atlanta!
Joe, will you be making a trip up North to see the film?
So glad to hear about the documentary, but even if it’s great, it’s just an “appetizer” to “The Rogue” for me. Books are magical to me, the experience of reading a book, having the author take you along on their journey, and allowing your imagination to “flesh out” the story is more thrilling to me than seeing a visual film or documentary. I’ve yet to have seen one movie that even came close to the experience of reading the author’s words.
I do hope you get a chance to return to Alaska, but I’m hoping that the added interest in the lower 48 will make it possible for me to get to meet you in person. I’m so looking forward to relishing the experience of reading your book.
Thanks for keeping us updated, it shows there’s definately a demand for this book which is a good thing!
Goodness—September 20th seems an awful long way off! Of course August is always a kind of dead month, only good for reading trashy thrillers and national debt crises, also the starting of international wars. But September is shaping up to be very interesting indeed–with the Quitter announcing she’s still “thinkin’ about leadin’ this country” at the Iowa Teahadist rally on the 3rd, Broomfield’s film and best of all, Joe’s book “‘The Rogue” release! I can’t wait to read it. “Fatal Vision” still holds me in its thrall to this day, so I expect great things from this Palin expose!
I’m impressed, blessed, and relieved that the “Undeniably Defeated” hasn’t crossed the fence to the Canadian cinema market (as far as I know). I guess we have intelligent decision makers at Cinema of Canada who forecasted its distribution to theatres would result in no return on their investment. I’m also convinced they know the intelligence of the Canadian population who would ignore it, especially self-propaganda about a miss wannabe who is without any intellectually disciplined process. In my opinion, she’s become quite the embarassment to the US political landscape – certainly not flattering on the country’s resume. I think “Sarah Palin–You Betcha!” is more in line with current popular Canadian opinion. I’ll be anxious to see the stats for Broomfield’s debut in TO.
There won’t be any signings, only media appearances. Please check earlier posts, on which I’ve explained why. At present, it looks like I’ll be in NY, DC, LA, Boston and Toronto, but reaching many other cities through TV, radio and print interviews.
Here’s the bottom line: publishers will not send an author to cities simply to do signings in stores.
Experience has taught them that in terms of additional books sold v. cost of airfare and lodging, it doesn’t pay. They have a budget for marketing and publicity (in the case of THE ROGUE, a generous budget by today’s standards.) But they want bang for buck. It would take two days for me to go to Atlanta, do a couple of local radio and tv shows, then a couple of signings. How many copies would be sold beyond those sold through national TV appearances done out of NY, DC or LA? Perhaps those days could be better spent, at less cost, by my staying in NY and doing radio and TV satellite appearances in markets such as Atlanta. Sorry to say–because I loved getting to different cities around the country and meeting readers–this isn’t the 20th Century any more. It’s the penny-pinching new world, in which the motto is “bottom line uber alles.”
–Joe
As it stands, I’ll probably be in Toronto, but not until the first week of October, after the film festival.
But I’m sure I’ll get to see the film: maybe Nick will trade me a DVD for a copy of THE ROGUE.
–Joe
…a disadvantage to living in such a sparsely populated state. Look forward to your visit no matter when it is. (Let’s hope they don’t book you for Jan or Feb!)
Molly–
Barça FC are touring North America at the moment, so nothing to see inside Camp Nou until later this month.
But second on my bucket list is to watch them perform their artistry there.
Seeing an opera at La Scala is third.
Seeing a Boca Juniors match in Buenos Aires is fourth.
A safari in Tanzania with my friend from the Brooks Range, Boyd Norton (http://www.wildernessphotography.com/phototours.htm) is fifth.
First? Watching the sun rise tomorrow morning.
–Joe
If you want a few compelling, non-trashy thrillers to help you through August, I’d recommend the
Van Veeteren books by Hakan Nesser.
This is wonderful news. The Queen is finally going to have the kind of pushback, in terms of telling her true story, that she has never had before. Mitch said it best in the very first comment above; Tag team the witch.
Sounds good! 🙂
So Mrs. Gun Lover makes people go through a metal detector to see her. Is there any single issue where it doesn’t turn out that she’s a major hypocrite???
Interesting that you say “publishers will not send an author to a city simply to do signings in store.” Since that’s exactly how the Palin publishers marketed all three books with their names on them, does that indicate that that their publishers had a lot of money to work with? I wonder if SaRAHPAC was involved in the expenses necessary, especially for Sarah’s first book bus tour? I also know that all three ‘book signing tours’ were abject failures.
In any case, can’t wait for the reviews of the movie, and to read your book. The truth hurts, and liars are always caught.
Great news about Broomfield’s film. I hope people aren’t too tired of Palin to watch it. I think it will give other journalists a chance to see the real Sarah. I can’t believe that all of them aren’t doing their jobs; they have other stories to write and don’t have time to investigate the blogs/reports about her. This film should give them what they need to know about SP in a nutshell. I am looking forward to reading Joe’s book! Thank you Joe, and thanks to your publishers too.
this announcement from c4p:
“We’ll update when more information becomes available but the Tea Party of America, the organization hosting the Governor’s September 3rd speech in Waukee, Iowa, is working on providing that buses that take you to Iowa for the event from Dallas, Florida, Kansas City, Denver, and the Twin Cities. ”
this could be a sign that she won’t be running for the presidential nomination. since people in those areas won’t get to see her at a campaign stop in the foreseeable future, as a substitute they are being brought into iowa.
And especially a woman who basically changes her identity and affiliations to suit whichever crowd she’s in.
“Hey, I’m just like you, Canadians, I snuck into your country to use your healthcare that one time!”
“Hey, I’m just like you, Jews, cuz look, Star of David necklace!”
“Hey, I’m just like you Bikers, I’m uh….sitting on a bike! And if you’re a Christian Biker, I’m like you too! I’m wearing a Cross! While sitting on a bike!”
It’s nauseating. I kinda want her to show up in Australia though and pretend to be an Australian.
“Hey, Aussies, I’m just like you….uh…..um…..I see Russia from my house??”
I’m sure my fellow Aussies will make short work of whatever lame-o attempt to pander. You haven’t lived till you’ve been skewered by the average Australian on the street…..=D
I think it’s a sign that they’re afraid only 10 people will show up.
🙂
While books are treasures for the mind, THE LIVING LIAR Sarah, must seen and heard on tape, that’s the medium she loves the most.
The clip on IM from Broomfield’s movie sent chills down my spine. When Broomfield asks her an unscripted question, Palin ignores him, flips her hair, and swigs from a water bottle, and then comes back with what she thinks is a snappy comeback. The moment is pure high school mean girl. What it made me realize is how rarely we’re allowed to see Palin without her calling the shots, and if you think of any other candidate, you DO see him/her responding to the unexpected and maintaining a professional demeanor. Palin doesn’t have that. She hasn’t been able to craft a professional self– and the idea that we might be governed by a woman mentally and emotionally stuck in her teens makes me want to shout from the rooftops. Like THE ROGUE, Broomfield’s film promises to be extremely revelatory, even to those of us who think we know too much.
You can hope she’ll melt and disappear but IMO she is more akin to a social disease – one that cannot be cured and is forever an irritation and a pain.
I don’t know about that…I was just at Business Insider
and saw this comment:
“william legge on Aug 3, 3:14 PM said:
@Stephen Schochet:
Bachmann pales in comparison to Sarah Palin as far as accomplishments, executive experience, and leadership ability. She does not even come close to Sarah Palin.”

This guy drinking major TerroristSarah kool-aid!
I think the film will be widely viewed just because people are so fed up with the non-political Palin sagas, the involved family traveling tours, the saturation of her kids in the news, like Bristol’s debut in the celebrity world, her future reality series. People are tired of listening to the Palin criticisms of everyone, of Bristol’s insults to the McCain women, the occasional Palin in People magazine, that trashy side that conflicts with a serious political contender. I think people will flock to this movie as it displays the Palin multiple contradictory personas. Can’t wait to see it along with the book in September.
This is why she is stalling.
“…When Broomfield asks her an unscripted question, Palin ignores him, flips her hair, and swigs from a water bottle, and then comes back with what she thinks is a snappy comeback. The moment is pure high school mean girl…”
When I saw that part of the clip I immediately thought: “She’s trying to ignite a mob-mentality situation.” She theoretically said “sic ’em!” when she finally replied “Ask these people” in the snottiest, snarliest way she could. Thankfully, he was immediately escorted out.
Congrats on the nice endorsement from Andrew Sullivan, Joe!

I believe that Sarah & her publishers had to do it that way because her followers/fans don’t buy books to read them. They are buying into the cult of Sarah Palin, and that includes her being all “down to earth” and actually rubbing shoulders with people. The more normal way of book promotion (that Joe is describing & will be doing) is to meet & be interviewed by newspeople–at the national or local level, to raise awareness & interest in the book. The people who buy Joe’s book will be wanting to read it, to become better informed. Most of us have no need to meet him in person to want to read the book; he isn’t a cult personality, he is a writer.
Plus, I think Sarah actually needs the adulation of whoever she’s around; that they are uneducated strangers who are creepily drawn to her looks & personality rather than any coherent ideals or values doesn’t matter to her; they “love” her, and she needs that like she needs air.
That’s very interesting, Sally! I had not thought of that until you pointed it out. I wonder if the difference is the capabilities of the authors. Joe can be put with any interviewer, on any show, and deal with whatever questions, in whatever style the interviewer prefers, come his way. And he wouldn’t need to see the questions in advance. He could be grilled about any part of his book and he would know why he wrote it and why it was included, and he would be able to back it up with facts.
Now I remember Palin’s carefully orchestrated book signings. No cameras, no questions, move along, move along. She would not have been capable of actually discussing the book, or responding to questions she had not previously seen about its many inconsistencies or outright lies. And not just because she didn’t write it, or most likely, read it either! So sit her nominally sentient ass on a chair signing books and not having to say anything but “Why, yes, I am wonderful, aren’t I?”
How did Andrew get a copy? Lucky guy!
I too read Sully’s post. The video clip with Lewis Black was very funny. What concerns me though is how did Sully get a “very scarce advance manuscript of the Rogue. . . ” If he was able to get his hands on one, won’t other journalists too? And as a result will there be leaks? I sure hope not. Joe, you mentioned in the past that there would be no excerpts and leaks in advance of publication, and I certainly hope that this remains the case.
Andrew made it very easy for readers to pre-order the book with a link to Amazon, so I did.
No doubt a bunch of others did too. Cool.
I trust Andrew to leak nothing. He was one of three people whom I authorized to receive bound galleys.
The embargo continues.

Limbaugh makes fun at Palin LOL
“You Have To Be A Twit To Tweet, And I’m Not A Twit”

Andrew is keeping this in a vault I trust. I’d hate for Andrew Breitbart and crowd to get bold. I still expect criminal activity from these people. James O’Keefe and his little sidekick are still on the loose unbelievably.
Not available at B&N nook version as a pre-order (yet), but I intend to keep looking.
its a sign the idiots are being strung along.
lots of times churches actually provide these buses.
wonder why?
Joe, off topic, but any news about getting all of your books available as ebooks at Barnes & Noble? Right now besides the Rogue, which they have listed as “Untitled by Joe McGinniss,” they have The Big Horse and Never Enough. I swear that it used to say The Rogue.
Those Hakkan Nesser books look great. I need some books for my upcoming Alaska trip!
It would be great if you gave us your opinion/recommendations on anything you read. Thanks!
It’s there for the nook. I’m not sure about harcd copy pre-order. But foe ebooks you do a search and enter his name, Joe McGinniss, and you will see it. They have the title wrong for some reason but I’m sure it will get corrected.
Sally, if memory serves, I seem to recall SarahPAC footing the bill for some of the bus expenses (and no, I’m not getting confused by the latest bus expenses her PAC paid for). I remember at the time thinking, how can it be legal for someone to use money from their non-profit to market and pay for their for-profit ventures?
I took it more as a cowardly display of having to call in for backups.
Dear Joe,
I cannot thank you enough for all of the research and outreach you’ve done – as well as all of the insanity that you’ve had to deal with. I could go on and on…
I know you’ve said that there will be no meetings or book signings for purchasers of your book – but I’m going to be moving to DC this month, and was wondering if you’ll do any type of lecture/discussion, etc. at “Poetry & Prose”?
Thank you for this and for your other work.
I love the Bruce Springsteen idea…but would also like to throw out another suggestion for future writings – our President Obama! “It’s the right thing to do!” : )
Cheers again – I cannot wait to get my hands on “The Rogue” (a real copy) read it cover to cover!
Best,
Alison
The bitch is in.. She will be declaring in Sept. Gear of folks cus this is going to be ugly.
i am an AK who knows the crazy SOB and we need to be vigilant.
